Some concern was expressed by our opponents that the presence of a grandmaster on board one indicated that we were taking the match (too?) seriously. When our top board’s opponent failed to show for the second year running your captain did not demure, and Alex faithfully dispatched his substitute / victim in short order – last to start his game and first to finish!
I won a piece very quickly but then took the rest of the evening to convert the full point.
