Match report by Michael Bennett
The Tigers managed a superb 5-3 win over visitors Hackney 1 tonight, to consolidate their position in Division 1 of the Middlesex League. With 8.5/13 match points, the Tigers have now secured a 3rd place finish!
On top board, Julian had a solid draw against IM Simon Anselll. Tim Rogers outplayed Mike Tasker on board 4 to offset a rare loss by Daniel Ellis against his 200+ opponent, and Paul du Buf had a solid draw on bottom board (2-2).
The Tigers then went ahead as Ionica Dragomir won with his usual positional squeeze (3-2). On board 2, Peter Lalić – coming up against FM Bob Eames on his debut for Hendon – also drew, although very short of time at the finish, when his opponent sportingly agreed a draw. (3.5.-2.5)
By then I had managed to wriggle out of an awful position and even seemed to be better at the end, but agreed a draw as I was short of time. (4-3)
Last to finish was on-form Joseph Levene, who had sped to a 2-pawn advantage early on, but missed something and was a piece down (R,N&2 pawns v R&pawn). However, his opponent’s flag fell while trying to win the ending to level the match! (5-3)
Congratulations to the whole team on an excellent performance!
