Match report by Michael Bennett
In the first of our two annual Hendon 1 v Hendon 2 matches, the Lions overcame stiff resistance and a couple of surprise results from a youthful Tigers team, to eventually come out 6-2 winners.
In order of finishing:
- 12-year-old Oren made short work of Salvatore on bottom board, with a nice attack against a weakened kingside, to give the Tigers an early lead (0-1)
- In a Morra gambit, Cristian coolly and calmly fended off Paul’s attack and converted his extra material (1-1)
- Simon also defused a dangerous-looking attack from Joseph, eventually winning material (2-1).
- Oscar’s pieces seemed to be roaming at will around the holes in Jonathan’s queenside and centre, but experience eventually told and Jonathan netted a rook to win (3-1)
- Duncan’s efforts to complicate the game in Giampaolo’s time trouble rebounded (4-1)
- Adam outplayed Federico in quiet but strong Raoofian ways, eventually winning the exchange and promoting a pawn (5-1)
- Rob defused counterplay from Jonathan – on his Hendon debut – and eventually steered the game into a won ending (6-1)
- In a long game, Dominic eventually capitalised on a couple of errors from Dan to finish the match (6-2)
All in all an entertaining match, and we look forward to more of the same next Thursday!
