Our 2023/24 season came to an end last Thursday with a comprehensive 5–1 win against Enfield in the second of our two friendly matches against them.

The club now takes a break for three weeks; there will be no club activities until Thursday 12th September, when the first FIDE Blitz of the new season will take place.

Many thanks to all who played in this match, and to everyone who participated in club life this season!

There was quite a commotion near the end of this match, as one of the games finished in truly bizarre fashion, with an Enfield player (who I will refrain from naming) resigning in a completely winning king-and-pawn ending, with four pawns against just one!

It appears the player miscounted and thought his opponent’s one remaining pawn was going to promote, when in fact his king was in time to catch it. The player in question had plenty of time on the clock as well; I’ve really never seen anything quite like it!

Still, they all count, and we can be happy to have lost just one game of the thirteen played across the two legs.
