Hendon Hurricanes narrowly defeat Spitfires

This week, our normal Thursday club night was moved to Wednesday because of a clashing event at the Cumberland Club. An internal friendly match took place over four boards, with the Hendon Hurricanes defeating the Hendon Spitfires 2½–1½.

Our original plan for this week was to play an under-1800 friendly against Muswell Hill, having defeated them 7–3 away last month. However, the Muswell Hill captain contacted us a few days prior to say they were unable to raise a team. This was very disappointing, since we’d raised a team of ten to visit them last month.

(Finding players willing to play in away matches is a major problem for us at the moment, about which I shall have more to say in due course; it seems Muswell Hill is also suffering from this problem.)

To avoid a total disappointment, I decided to divide our players into two teams, which we informally named the Hurricanes and the Spitfires in honour of the local RAF Museum, and play an internal match at the same time limit.

We were able to put together a well-balanced match, which finished with a narrow victory for the Hurricanes.
